What or who is an Independent Traveller?
Date Posted: 24/05/2010
Backpacker, Flashpacker or independent traveller. Who are you?
               Foreigners in China
Is it that there are simply more terms to describe backpackers these days?
Perhaps there are several new breeds of "backpacker" or has the backpacker era been outgrown by an increasing and more diverse independent Travel market?

So what is a "Flashpacker"? Are they older members of our community looking to experience a  "Real" adventure while still enjoying creature comforts such as private rooms with bathrooms? (and keep family informed via facebook?)

Or is a modern day "Flashpacker" those in their 20's, but now hold or held a professional job or qualifications, but wish to independently travel around the globe armed with an IPod, IPhone, Apple Mac and wear brand name clothes?

China as a Travel destination is now, more than ever, seeing an increase in "Gap Packers". While Gap Year travel is not a new trend, what is a new trend is the amount of graduates or school leavers looking to spend a year in a developing country volunteering or undertaking intern work (or both). Gap Packers also generally spend a lengthy amount of time "backpacking" around the country they are in as well, so do they then become Backpackers?

Another emerging trend we're seeing is families with younger children wishing to travel with us or a mum and daughter or father and son trio! Are these people "Backpackers" or should the new phrase simply be "Indepedent" Traveller?
